Greetings to all who share the wisdom of feng shui!

Down-sizing!

This month I moved from a 4200 sq ft house to a 2700 sq ft condo.  The
reasons are many and complex, but down-sizing was not one of them.  Nevertheless, I felt compelled and could not
avoid the need to purge.

Stuff is a burden, but I had a crew packing stuff.  Unpacking stuff is a
whole other story.  Boxes are stackedhigh – stuff is staring at me!  Decisions big and small are piling up.  Do I need this?  Do I want it?  Do I love it? Is it important?  Where do I put it?

Finally – “it goes”!  But where? Good Will?  Trash?  Second Hand?
A friend? A relative? E-Bay? Craig’s List? The neighborhood garage sale?

From the microcosm of my own stuff, it now goes into the macrocosm of global clutter. I am pleading with my kids, “please don’t ever again give me another object.”  Instead, I’ll eat it, smell it, drink it, burn it, go there to see and hear it – anything that can be consumed.

Adopt a new code of consumer ethics?  Recycle, re-use, and make it
bio-degradable.  Clear your space and create room to breathe and to move.
Believe me, it’s liberating!

What about feng shui in all of this?  Your good feng shui may be
smothered in all your stuff which is creating sha qi (chi) for you – you know, the bad kind of qi (chi). Some radical space clearing, i.e. getting rid of stuff, might reveal the kind of good chi you’ve been looking for.

Stand in your entry way and do the squint test or look through the port hole of your fist.  Is there anything that stands out?  If so what is it?  Does it send a message or have some kind of meaning.  Or do you see stuff and nothing in particular that attracts your attention? Or did you perhaps stuff it all behind a closet door?  Depending on where it is, you might have
created a whole other set of obstacles and negative meaning.

If you have actually managed to create a path, cleared a space and down-sized your belongings, your good feng shui will reveal itself, and you begin to understand what it’s all about.  You feel liberated, your vision improves, new opportunities arise, well-being spreads and comfort settles in.  Peace and quiet have found a new home.

Volume 11 Number 1 January 2011

Greetings to all who share the wisdom of feng shui!

Good Bye Tiger – Hello Rabbit!

The Tiger has haunted us now for a full year, and many of us have succumbed to his sudden moves with experiences of upheaval and adversity.  We would now welcome a gentle and quiet stretch of time with the year of the Golden Rabbit whom we usher in on February 3rd of 2011.  Such are the expected characteristics of this calm and friendly animal in the circle of the Chinese Zodiac.

Chinese astrological calculations, however, indicate hidden elements that are clashing, such as fire and water, metal and wood.  These aspects create conflict and unrest but more on a global scale.  Prospects thus are for nature and politics to continue to rumble and churn.

As individuals we can look forward to a more peaceful existence without the sudden pounces of the tiger.  May he stay hidden in the jungle for the next twelve years.  The Golden Rabbit is expected to increase prosperity and personal luck.

Rabbits among us are usually generous and kind – traits that we should mimic and spread.  Rabbits are elegant creatures and like to entertain in comfortably luxurious home settings.  We could take a page out of their agenda and focus on our own surroundings by creating a serene and more beautiful home environment.  Strip away the clutter, sweep off the messy surface areas and place a single object in full view.  This will be your new focal point, that can fill you with pride and beauty, perhaps elicit a smile if it is whimsical or speaks of distant and fond memories.

In the hidden element structure of the rabbit year, we have a shortage of earth.  By introducing more of this element into our immediate environment, we can create stability and feel anchored.  Contact your favorite feng shui expert if you need advice in making the most auspicious adjustments.

Be inspired by the rabbit and find your “pièce de résistance” this year.  Perhaps you own it already – somewhere hidden in the clutter of closets, attic or basement.  Go on a treasure hunt in your own house.  Whether your own it or buy it, ask yourself ‘do I love it’ ‘is it uplifting’ ‘does it remind me of a wonderful experience’ ‘does it make me smile’ ‘does it give me a sense of value’?  Displayed prominently, it will lift your spirit and give you joy.

Greetings to all who share the wisdom of feng shui!
Recycle!

Recycling can be different from what we think it is.  When you take your newspapers and bottles to the curb for pick up, you have done your green and civic duty, and, perhaps you don’t give it any further thought.

An artfully engaged group in New York, however, has turned recycling into a creative and fun project.  In a bulletproof steel and glass structure they hurl glass bottles at each other and call it “Glassphemy,” a psychological recycling experiment. (New York Times 5-12-10 C 1) Smashing glass and activating flashing lights, designed to react to the sound and vibrations of breaking bottles, may be a deeply purging experience to the psyche like Greek tragedy was to the onlookers. The designers of the project wanted to make recycling a more visceral experience and at the same time purge some New York aggression.  The same group had previously recycled dumpster pods into swimming pools causing an intense following among participants.

We could take the idea of recycling to a more gentle, yet creative level and apply it to our feng shui experience.  Instead of a “maybe box” we should install a “recycle closet.”  The designated space will be more complex than just a simple recycle bin for a clutter clearing exercise.

There is complexity in the word “recycle,” almost to the point of redundancy.  A cycle is not linear but repetitious.  A recycle therefore points to a higher degree of repetition.  “Re-use” is our magic formula. Whether we want to de-clutter, create more open areas for qi to flow freely, or find an object no longer desirable, the recycle closet is the ideal holding pen until further use.

For earth laden pack rats, it would also be comforting to know that the recycle closet does not require a final parting like the recycle bin on the curb.  Instead, there might be a new era for reviving a formerly favorite object, give it new meaning, or remodel it into a work of art.

The above mentioned group has even found additional use for the broken pieces by polishing them into smooth colored shards that could become part of lamps or other light emitting objects.  Connie Spruill and Sylvia Watson’s book “Feng Shui With What You Have” is a vivid reminder that all we need is a new way of looking at things to begin a healthy recycle of ideas.
